Her life was marked by many strokes of fate and is probably one of the most famous love tragedies.
Elisabeth was born on Christmas Eve 1837 in Munich and grew up in her country estate Schloss Possenhofen on Lake Starnberg with numerous siblings.
At the age of 15, the young Elisabeth travelled to Austria with her mother and her sister Helene to be introduced to the future Emperor Franz Joseph.
Franz Joseph fell in love with Elisabeth and the two were married the following year. Less than a year after the wedding, Elisabeth gave birth to her first child at the age of 17, and three more followed.
